The Systems and Control area carries on several experimental activities in its laboratories along the following themes:
Robotics and medical applications (http://sirslab.dii.unisi.it/): research activities of the laboratory are in computer vision, mobile robotics, haptics, virtual reality and medical applications in neuroscience and surgical simulations.
Mobile robotics (http://www-dii.ing.unisi.it/~control/MobileRobotics): The aim of the laboratory is to investigate techniques and algorithms for localization, map building and motion planning of autonomous mobile robots.
Remote control for distance learning (http://act.dii.unisi.it): The “Automatic Control Telelab” is a remote laboratory developed with educational purposes which allows students to perform remote control experiments on physical processes.
Process control: several physical processes and control experiments built in house are available for research and teaching purposes. The laboratory supports research activities on control and optimization of hybrid systems (http://www.dii.unisi.it/hybrid/ )
Main hardware and software resources available in the laboratories are:
Mobile platforms (Nomad XR4000, Pioneer 3AT, Pioneer 2DX), with multisensorial equipment including laser rangefinders, sonars and cameras. Software tools for localization, map building and motion planning of autonomous robots in indoor environments, and for model predictive control of dynamical processes.
5 Haptic Interfaces: 3 Omega (Force Dimension) 2 Phantom (Sensable); 3 Vision Systems (2 pin-hole and 1 panoramic by Lumenera and Remote Reality); Puma 560 (Unimate); SDK for Computer Vision and Haptics.
Optimization packages (Ilog CPLEX, Xpress-MP), software packages for rapid prototyping (xPC-Target, LabView). Array of wireless sensor nodes (motes) for control over networks.
